Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian, along with Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri and Deputy Majority Leader Joseph Victor Ejercito, recently received Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Endo Kazuya at the Senate as the latter concludes his tour of duty in the country.
Noting how fortunate the Philippines has been for receiving excellent Japanese envoys in recent years, the Senate President lauded the Japanese Ambassador’s contributions in shaping seven decades of Philippines-Japan friendship and comprehensive partnership.
He also recognized the Ambassador’s efforts in deepening defense and security cooperation with the Philippines, and for promoting greater investment opportunities in the country together with the Japanese Chamber of Commerce.
For his part, Ambassador Endo acknowledged the Senators’ cooperation extended to him and the Japanese Government during his stint in the Philippines. He committed to continue working closely to further promote inter-parliamentary exchanges, as the visit by a Japanese Senate delegation to Manila is expected next month and by a high-level Philippine Senate delegation to Tokyo later this year.
Furthermore, he expressed his government’s request to continue prioritizing the pending legislative measures that can further facilitate the ease of doing business in the country, the updating of the two countries’ taxation treaty, as well as the full operationalization of the Reciprocal Access Agreement and of the various big-ticket JICA-assisted infrastructure projects in the Philippines.
Also part of his term conclusion, Endo paid a farewell call on National Security Adviser Eduardo Oban Jr. Both reaffirmed commitment to Japan-Philippines security cooperation for regional peace and stability.
