Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III welcomed the visiting National Assemby of Hungary led by Speaker László Kövér at the Philippine Senate today.
The visit was aimed to highlight the deepening friendship and cooperation between the Philippines and Hungary, as well as the shared aspirations for stronger ties with the European Union.

“Hungary has long been our valued partner. We are grateful for your country’s continued support, including our bid for a non-permanent seat in the UN Security Council for the 2027–2028 term,” Senate President Sotto said, emphasizing the Philippines’ appreciation for Hungary’s steadfast support in multilateral engagements.
Reaffirming Hungary’s commitment to strengthen its bilateral relations with the Philippines, Speaker Kövér said, “Hungary is committed to reinforcing the ties and relations between the Philippines and the European Union in all possible shape and form.”

Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri, who also joined the meeting, cited Hungary’s generous scholarship programs that continue to provide opportunities for Filipino students to study in Hungarian universities.
Furthermore, Senator Zubiri, who also serves as the President of the Philippines-Hungary Parliamentary Friendship Group, disclosed that Hungary is set to finalize a USD33-million (PHP1.9 billion) loan agreement with the Philippines to fund major water treatment and desalination projects aimed at improving access to clean water and strengthening climate resilience.
Speaker Kövér announced the discussions on the water project have reached an advanced stage and is steadiy progressing. “In fact, we are close to signing the agreement. And we are currently waiting for your response to the latest draft agreement,” he said.
The officials of both countries expressed a shared resolve to strengthen partnerships in diplomatic engagement, educational exchange, and economic collaboration.
