Head of the Philippine women’s national football delegation Senator Pia Cayetano lauded the team’s historic triumph following the 2023 FIFA World Cup Group A match with New Zealand on July 26 at the Wellington Regional Stadium.
It is the first-ever win of Filipinas, the Philippine women’s team, in the World Cup after pulling off a 1-0 victory over the co-host team, Football Ferns.
Recounting the atmosphere during the game, Senator Cayetano said, “Despite being outnumbered by the home team crowd, you could hear ‘LET’S GO PILIPINAS’ being chanted throughout the stadium. The joy and pride we feel right now at the Wellington Regional Stadium are beyond words. With each heart-pounding second that passed, we awaited this historic victory.”
“Our team has courageously defied the odds and has shown through sports, through football, what Filipinos can do when supported and given the opportunity to excel. They are here at the World Cup competing with the best,” she added.
Filipinas, currently ranked 46th, will compete against the world’s no. 12, Norway, on July 30 for a chance to advance from the group stage to the knockout round of the World Cup.
